"How does Insta-Snow Work?  This chemical is better known as the super absorbent powder (polymer) hidden in the lining of disposiable baby diapers. However scientists accidentally created a variation of the diaper polymer that was far more fluffy when it absorbed water.  Voila…that's Insta-Snowtm . Insta-Snowtm  is in a classification of chemicals called a polymer.  The word polymer simply means long chain of molecules ("poly" means many and "mer" is a unit or molecule)  Insta-Snowtm  soaks up water using the process of osmosis (water molecules pass through a barrier from one side to another) When water comes in contact with the polymer, it moves from outside the polymer to the inside and causes it to swell. The polymer chains have elastic quality, but they can only stretch so far and hold so much water.  Otherwise your container of Insta-Snowtm  would grow as big as a house! Hey, that would be so cool!"

Who invented Insta-Snowtm?

Insta-Snowtm or SnoWonder was originally developed in Japan more than 10 years ago, for use in indoor Snowboard parks. It is still used for that purpose, and at 27 degrees it is as fast as real snow for sports purposes.

Where can you buy the Insta-Snow Polymer? I used two sources for this lab . Educational Inovations sells it in various amounts. It took 3 pounds for my five classes, but if you are just doing your own experiment at home you don't need that much.
